On 10 December 2021, the European Banking Authority (EBA) launched a public consultation on its draft Guidelines on the use of remote customer onboarding solutions.
The Guidelines set out a common understanding of the steps financial sector operators should take to ensure safe and effective remote customer onboarding practices in line with applicable anti-money laundering and countering the financing of terrorism (AML/CFT) legislation and the EU’s data protection framework. Once adopted, the Guidelines will apply to all financial sector operators that are within the scope of the Anti-money Laundering Directive (AMLD), i.e. Directive (EU) 2015/849 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 20 May 2015 on the prevention of the use of the financial system for the purposes of money laundering or terrorist financing, amending Regulation (EU) No 648/2012 of the European Parliament and of the Council, and repealing Directive 2005/60/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council and Commission Directive 2006/70/EC.
A public hearing will take place on 24 February 2022. The deadline for the submission of comments is 10 March 2022.
