The European Commission launches a consultation on a digital euro

The European Commission has launched a public consultation on the introduction and use of a digital euro. The consultation is addressed to professional entities, including payment service providers, consumer organisations and AML/CFT supervisors.

The consultation aims to collect information on, among others, the market’s expectations related to the use of a digital currency, its role and impact on the financial system, as well as opinions on the application of the current personal data protection and AML/CFT legislation.

The consultation is also aimed at complementing the open consultation carried out by the European Central Bank between October 2020 and January 2021, which was addressed mainly to the citizens of Member States.

The consultation period closes on 14 June 2022. Information about the consultation is available here.
