Common position on Artificial Intelligence Act

On 6 December 2022, the Council of the European Union adopted a common position on (‘general approach’ to) the Artificial Intelligence Act . The document is to ensure that artificial intelligence (AI) systems introduced and used in the EU market are safe and comply with the law on fundamental rights and Union values.

In April 2021, the Commission presented a draft regulation. It is a key element of the EU policy aimed at promoting the development of safe AI. .

The draft act follows a risk-based approach and establishes uniform horizontal legal framework for AI. That goes hand in hand with other initiatives, including the Coordinated Plan on Artificial Intelligence, which aims to accelerate investment in AI in Europe.
