The British parliament has set out to shape global technical standards for AI. The project will be led by the Alan Turing Institute, supported by the British Standards Institution (BSI) and the National Physical Laboratory (NPL).

The initiative aims to create conditions for the development of AI by introducing regulatory changes, increasing the innovativeness of projects, developing practical tools for businesses and creating an education platform for knowledge sharing, and also for the promotion and development of global AI standards.

The Alan Turing Institute is to be supported by BSI, the world’s oldest standards body, and NPL, the country’s national metrology institute. Both organisations will co-create the framework for standardisation and research for the purposes of the pilot project.

Establishing the AI Standards Hub is part of the 10-year National AI Strategy. The strategy assumes that by 2031, the United Kingdom will become a leading global player in the area of AI research and development. The strategy’s assumptions include: to invest and plan for the long-term needs of the AI ecosystem; to support the transition to an AI-enabled economy, capturing the benefits of innovation in the UK, and ensuring AI benefits all sectors and regions; and to ensure that technological development is managed in such a way as to encourage innovation, investment, and protect the public and fundamental values.
