Bank of China issues first tokenised notes

The investment banking division of Bank of China International (BOCI) has issued tokenised notes on the main Ethereum blockchain in Hong Kong.

BOCI has issued CNH 200 million in fully digitalised structured security notes and has placed the securities to its clients in the Asia Pacific region.

The recent transaction marks the first product of this kind in Asia Pacific, created under Hong Kong law and tokenised on the Ethereum’s main chain of blocks, that has successfully introduced regulated securities onto a public blockchain.

Ying Wang, BOCI’s Deputy CEO said ‘We are driving the simplification of digital asset markets and products for customers in Asia Pacific through the development of blockchain‑based digital structured products, designed specifically for customers in Asia Pacific.

Aurelian Troendle, the Global Head of MTN Trading at UBS, added ‘High-frequency issuance activity can benefit from vast efficiency gains through the use of blockchain technology, which will ultimately bring advantages to investors.
