On 16 January 2025, the European Securities and Markets Authority (“ESMA”) published a joint report on crypto-assets developments on its website, which was prepared in cooperation with the European Banking Authority (“EBA”). It contains an analysis and assesment of the developments of decentralised finance (“DeFi”) in crypto-assets markets and the regulatory treatment of decentralised crypto-assets systems, lending and borrowing in crypto-assets and staking. This report is ESMA’s and EBA’s contribution to the report that the European Commission is required to submit to the European Parliament and the Council pursuant to Article 142 of Regulation 2023/1114[1].
